Multiple means of expression in fiction

April 5, 2009 · 1 Comment

After the Kindle, publishers want to take fiction to a new level. Not only do they want to put it on an electronic medium, but they also want to make it more graphic by including video and make it more interactive by allowing readers to comment on it!

It looks like one of the main target populations for this innovation is children. As one publisher puts it, “This is a new kind of storytelling for kids who are growing up using technology and being formed by it in ways we can’t even imagine. We are inviting them to collaborate and participate.”

    Hi Aneeka-
Thanks for the link to an interesting article. I agree that children are the main target for multimedia digital books. However, I wonder if these innovative designs are reaching reluctant readers. I imagine that students who are already fond of reading and social networking and who view technology as s source for entertainment would be the most ready audience for this material. I wonder how publishers can reach out to students who are not motivated to read or whose parents do not have the financial resources to invest in the computer, internet access, and now an iphone that readers of digitally based books are expected to have.
